Diversity Workshop
Pre - JSM Diversity Workshop
Fostering Diversity in Statistics

Welcome to the home page for the first Pre-JSM Diversity Workshop!

Objectives of the workshop include:

  1. increasing the active participation of U.S. minorities in ASA and its activities,
  2. establishing critical mentoring and networking relationships for statisticians at all career levels, and
  3. increasing the number of minorities successful in graduate work (i.e., student retention) and professional careers, and increasing the number of minorities entering graduate study (i.e., student recruitment) in statistics.

The workshop is open to minority graduate students in statistics or biostatistics programs, minority undergraduates in statistics, math, or related disciplines, minority statisticians in academia, government, and the private sector, and key faculty from minority-serving institutions who advise and mentor undergraduates in math or related disciplines.

The inaugural workshop was held on Saturday, August 1, 2009 in Washington, DC.  This event  was supported by the American Statistical Association, Bureau of Labor Statistics, and SAS.

Please stay tuned for news of the next workshop, tentatively scheduled for the 2011 JSM meeting.
